Extension Spring and Cable Work
The Springs Beside the Tracks
Walk into the garage, look up, and follow the horizontal tracks back from the door toward the rear wall. If a long coiled spring lies alongside each track at ceiling height, that is an extension system.
Each spring hooks to a bracket near the front, stretches back, and connects to a cable that runs over a pulley and down to the bottom bracket of the door. When the door closes, the spring stretches. When you open it, the spring contracts and does the lifting.
Older Huntington Beach garages are full of these, mostly because they need almost no headroom above the opening. Where a torsion shaft wants a foot of clear wall, an extension system wants nothing.
The Containment Cable Is Not Optional
Inside each extension spring there should be a steel cable, threaded straight down the middle of the coil, anchored at the rear hanger and at the front bracket. It does nothing at all in normal operation.
It matters at the moment the spring breaks. A stretched extension spring is a loaded object. When it parts, the two halves release along the axis of the spring, and without a cable through the centre the broken half travels. It goes across the garage at the height of a windscreen, or a chest freezer, or a person.
With the cable through it, the same failure is a bang and a spring hanging on a wire.
How to check yours in a few seconds:
- Look at the end of the spring nearest the rear of the garage. There should be a thin cable coming out of the coil and looping around the hanger.
- Trace it forward. It should be anchored at the other end too, not just tucked in.
- A cable that has come adrift at one end is doing nothing. It needs re-anchoring.
If they are bare, that is the job we would put first, ahead of anything cosmetic. It is inexpensive and it takes very little time.
Replacing the Pair
Extension springs are rated by the weight they carry, and they are colour coded at the end for that rating. Both sides get the same rating, and both sides get replaced together, for the same reason as torsion. Identical age, identical cycles, and a mismatched pair pulls the door up crooked.
Getting the tension off is a specific sequence. The door goes fully open, which is when extension springs are at their most relaxed, and it gets clamped or locked so it cannot travel. Only then does anything come apart. Reversing that order is exactly how people are hurt on this system.
What Else Comes Off With Them
Extension systems have more moving parts in the load path than torsion does, and they all wear.
- Pulleys. The sheaves seize or the bearing wears oval, and a stiff pulley saws through the cable.
- Lift cables. Cheap, and they should be replaced with the springs rather than reused.
- S hooks and eye bolts. They open out over the years, which is a slow failure most people never look at.
- The rear hangers. Often screwed into whatever timber was handy in 1974.
Doing the springs and leaving a seized pulley in place means the new cable frays in a year.
Coastal Wear on an Extension System
Close to the water the coils rust and start to bind against each other rather than sliding cleanly. You can often hear it before you see it, a rasping note as the door opens rather than a smooth extension.
The pulleys suffer worse than the springs do. A salt seized pulley is common within a mile of the beach and it is the most frequent cause of a cable failure on this system here.
Should You Convert to Torsion?
Sometimes. Torsion is smoother, wears more evenly, holds the door better if a cable lets go, and keeps the side room clear. If your garage has around twelve inches of clear wall above the opening and you are already spending money on springs, it is a fair conversation.
But plenty of garages here genuinely do not have that headroom, and a proper extension system with sound pulleys and containment cables is a perfectly safe way to run a door. We are not going to pretend otherwise to sell a bigger job.
